Schedule and Events - Toronto Sailing Club
National CAA and International Sanctioned Regattas

The Canadian Albacore Championships are held in September. If a member wishes to take a club boat to a regatta that is outside the Toronto Harbour area, permission must be obtained in advance from the Executive. Permission will only be granted for the events, which are sanctioned by the boat’s class association.

Eligible boats may enter by completing registration with the regatta registration committee and presenting a valid measurement certificate to the committee in accordance with the NOR. Boats, sails or other equipment are subject to measurement at the discretion of the organizing authority.

The helm of all boats shall be a full or associate member in good standing of a national Albacore association. The championship shall be conducted with the competitors divided into two fleets: a President's Fleet (for more experienced racers); and a Challenger Fleet (for less experienced racers).

Regattas Non Sanctioned
Non-sanctioned regattas are held throughout the sailing season in Toronto Harbour and elsewhere. Each of the OHSF clubs sponsors a weekend regatta in which three or four races are run each day. The Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club sponsor an open regatta in May (TARTS) and The Royal Canadian Yacht Club sponsors an open regatta in June. Each season one of the OHSF clubs sponsors a Women’s Helm regatta and a New Skippers’ race. Sailing associations and clubs outside Toronto also sponsor Albacore regattas.

Fall Series
This is a continuation of the Friday Night Race Series into the fall. The same rules of entry apply – random draw. However, 2 or more races are held during the day on scheduled Saturdays or Sundays but there is no club championship at stake.

Harbour Master

The Harbour Master Series is a series of 16 races for Albacores, held about once or twice a month on a Sunday afternoons in the inner or outer Harbour from May through September.

This Series for Albacores began in 1973 to promote weekend racing. It was organized by three clubs located on the Toronto Islands- the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, North Toronto Sailing Club and Westwood Sailing Club. The perpetual trophy was donated by Captain John Mann, the Harbour Master of Toronto, hence the name of the Series. Now the series is run by Royal Canadian Yacht Club, the four Community Clubs (Toronto Island Sailing Club, Mooredale Sailing Club, St. Jamestown Sailing Club, and Westwood Sailing Club), and the Outer Harbour Centreboard Club.

Any boat which is a member of one of the organizing clubs or the Canadian Albacore Association (CAA) or the United States Albacore Association (USAA) is eligible to participate in the Series. Boats from the Community Clubs (MSC, St.JSC, TISC and WSC) will have their fees paid by their clubs. Private boat owners should register their boats by paying their $16.00 per boat series fee by cheque payable to "Canadian Albacore Association”.

Prizes will be awarded to the registered skipper and crew of the top 3 boats in each of the races. These prizes can be obtained from the host race chair or his/her designate, and will generally be awarded the day of the races at the host club or designate.

Overall series trophies will be held following the final race of each year and is based on combined results.

Series Champion- Harbour Master Trophy. The Harbour Master Trophy is awarded to the Top Skipper of the Series. The championship is based on the scores of the skipper's best 8 races sailed.

Participation Award - David Treissman Memorial Trophy. This trophy was donated in 1986 by the Canadian Albacore Association as a participation award in memory of David Treissman, who was active in the Association and the Harbour Master Series. The winner is defined to be the Helmsperson racing in the most races without winning the series. In the event of a tie, the trophy will be awarded to the individual with the highest ranking.

Note that for purposes of determining the winner of this award, a race actually finished without subsequent DSQ or RAF is considered to be better than a DNS or DNF or OCS or DSQ or RAF (which would score N+1 points).

The AL Osatchoff Memorial Trophy. This trophy was donated in 2005 by the Canadian Albacore Association in memory of AL Osatchoff who died in September 2004. AL was a member of Westwood Sailing Club and an active member of the fleet. The trophy will be awarded to the Top Crew of the series. The championship is based on the scores of the crew’s best 8 races sailed.

Friday Night Races

Beginning in May, Friday night is race night. Mooredale and four other community clubs participate in a 19-week race series. The basic principles are as follows:(a picture of the start line with over 40 boats)Only community club members sailing in club owned Albacores, using club owned equipment and community club members sailing their own or club Lasers are eligible for community club awards.

Each community club must use a random draw to select skipper and crew combinations.Privately owned Albacores are eligible for the private boat owner awards.Prizes for the Albacore class will be awarded to the top 5 community club boats and to the top private finishing boat in the top overall five finishing positions.

At the end of the season the perpetual trophies will be awarded to the first place community club Albacore skipper and crew. The awards will be based on the points scored in his/her best 5 races of the season. In the event of a tie, the award will go to the skipper or crew, with the most first, seconds, thirds etc. If this still fails to break a tie, then as many extra races as are necessary will be used to break the tie.

The highly coveted Spanish Donkey Award will be presented to the winning club that has the lowest total score of its best 8 placings of Albacores entered each week. If a tie exists the award will go to the club with the most first, seconds, thirds etc.

  1. The sign-up list is posted at least two weeks prior to the race.
  2. A random draw is used to match skipper with crew. The draw takes place a week before the race (usually on Wednesday or Monday before the race).
  3. If you are a substitute (which means you didn’t get drawn) and you show up you will be guaranteed a place in the following Friday's race (that is only if you didn’t sail).
  4. If you are unable to attend the race you must inform the Racing Officer before 6 pm on the night of the race. If you do not do this, your name will be removed from the next week’s draw.
  5. Boat Captains have first priority to their assigned boats for any Friday Night race for which they have been drawn and for any regatta. If there are more members wishing to sail in a regatta than there are boats available then a draw will be held. If a boat captain is drawn for the regatta then they have first priority on their assigned boat.

The races are held in the Outer Harbour or the Inner Harbour (between downtown and the Toronto Islands) depending on the host club.

  1. Two separate start sequences are run; one for Albacores and one for Lasers.
  2. After the race, the race results will be announced at a local bar. The top five community boats receive prizes.
