Mooredale Sailing Club has one problem: there are so many things to do, and so many reasons to be at the club, that you either live at the club, or choose to miss something. Here is a brief description of the major annual events, and some of the ways in which you can become involved.
Wednesday
Night Socials
The staple of our social swirl throughout the season. Each Wednesday, a different group of "volunteers" makes dinner for the club. Years ago, it started with burgers, but that no longer cuts the mustard. A typical dinner will have three courses for a measly $8 per person. While the chefs are whipping up masterpieces, everyone else is out for a sail, reclining on the deck, or swapping racing lies.
Friday
Night Racing
Friday Nights are the scene of the hotly contested Club Championship. In excess of 50 Albacores hit the start line at 7:00pm, racing for club and individual honours. Mooredale has won the series for fifteen straight years.
Everyone is encouraged to compete. There is a random draw pairing helms and crews, so you will get a chance to race with everyone. The emphasis is on fun and learning. After the race, we adjourn to a local pub for dinner, announcement of the race standings, and the presentation of the coveted "mugs" to the top five boats in the race.
Weekend
Regattas and Parties
Other, less fortunate people drive two or three hours to their cottage. By the time they get off the 400, we've already gone for a sail, put the boat away, and quaffed a cold one while tanning the hard-to-get spot between the toes.
On the weekends, the pace picks up. Each of the five Albacore clubs takes turns hosting a weekend regatta. Usually four races, followed by dinner and dancing. This is your chance to meet all the other hundreds of sailors at the other clubs. If you can't have fun here, shoot yourself.
Monday
Night Race Training
Come one, come all. Sail with all sorts of different sailors under the gentle tutelage of some of the best sailors around. The focus is on fun and learning, with lots of practice.
For new sailors, there are two or three sessions specifically geared to learning the basics of racing, as well as crewing skills, sail trim, and an introduction to the rules of racing.
Season
Closer Party
After Labour Day, your season will come home to roost. An awards banquet quite unlike any you have seen before, all your peccadillos are bared in front of the club. The best capsize, the worst pick-up line, the best swim suit, the worst swim suit . . . you get the idea. No holds barred, and a great time had by all.
Off-season
Events
The boats and docks come out of the water in October, and are launched
again in April. In the dark period known as "winter" or "dry
school", the club keeps rolling with Halloween parties, Christmas
and New Year's parties, ski trips, skating parties, and the odd pub
night for no good reason other than we want one.
